Jet lag can ruin
all sorts of plans. While I was in San Francisco earlier this month and holed up at the
luscious
Taj Campton
Place, I was too
tired and jet lagged to stray very far from the hotel in search
of a good meal. In the past, I've enjoyed dinner at Zuni, which I
love, but this time I relied on the concierge's tips for where to
eat close by. On our first night we tucked into Chinese food at
the very casual and highly entertaining Hunan
Homes where the wait staff was cheerfully bonkers. It
was just what we needed: gallons of strong black tea and simple,
hearty Chinese food and amusing banter. The next day, after
trekking up Lombard Street, we stopped in for lunch at the
charming Nook wine bar where we tucked into huge ciabatta
sandwiches and washed it down with a sake ginger cocktail
(The New York Times recently ran a good story about San Francisco's lovely, and
snobless, wine bars). I also enjoyed E&O in
Union
Square, which reminded
me of a bigger version of New York's Kelly and
Ping. By this time, we were pretty much back to normal and
ordered up a feast: duck imperial rolls with Thai basil and star
anise, as well as smoked black cod and grilled salmon glazed with
sweet mustard- and best of all, a short walk from the
hotel.
