Day 39: Fastest Duck in the East

Beijingers sure like their duck. Once reserved only for emperor's I'm glad to say the common people are now allowed to share in the delight that is Peking Duck. There are literally thousands of restaurants offering the best duck in town. If you don't have time for a sit down dinner lots of stalls sell “duck in a bag” although where and how you're supposed to eat it I'm not sure. We ended up going to one of the Quanjude restaurants near Hepingmen. Maybe it was a mistake to turn up at 8pm (last orders) but it was certainly the fastest served Peking Duck I've ever had. Within 5 minutes of sitting down we were already watching a chef carve his way through an entire duck with remarkable efficiency. The next 30 minutes saw us devour the duck with pretty much the same efficiency. I have to say I found the meal only OK, I wouldn't be rushing back anytime soon. Visitors should try to get a local recommendation from their concierge and book in advance.
