Angling for Some Sun

Submitted by Christina Valhouli on Wed, 2008-01-30 08:41.

anglers_hotel.jpgIs it just me or does a new hotel open in Miami every other week? Joining the latest crop is the Angler’s Hotel. The hotel is smack in the middle of Washington Street and is housed in a series of former Art Deco buildings, which are connected by walkways. The look is very soothing and grown up- with lots of taupe and cream used in the 49 guest rooms. The smallest rooms are more like studio apartments and the biggest have outdoor hot tubs and terraces. The Angler’s  has a rooftop terrace,  open-air lounge and pool, and the in house restaurant is a Parisian style brasserie. The Angler's Boutique Resort, 660 Washington Avenue, Miami, Florida. White Hot Outlaw

Submitted by Christina Valhouli on Tue, 2008-01-15 22:09.

whitelaw_hotel.JPGThe next time I’m in Miami, I know where I’ll want to call home- the groovy Whitelaw hotel. You have to love a hotel whose motto is, "Clean sheets, hot water, stiff drinks.” This eye-popping place- which has a very liberal use of hot pink- is located in the middle of it all on Collins Avenue, near the beach.  It’s a bit rock and roll, very glam and it’s been described as David Lachapellesque. The Whitelaw also seems to be quite the party hotel. There are complimentary drinks from 7 p.m. to 8 p.m. daily at the martini bar, and the hotel offers VIP access to some of Miami’s hottest clubs. Guest rooms have shag carpets, plasma televisions and crystal chandeliers. It's all so Austin Powers in South Beach. Heavenly!

Eat With Danny DeVito

Submitted by Christina Valhouli on Mon, 2007-12-03 08:08.

When we were in South Beach in October, we noticed that Danny DeVito was staying at our hotel, The Setai. (However, the DeVito sighting pales in comparison to our all-time best celeb sighting- Giselle Bundchen at the Mandarin Oriental in New York ..Well, it was my husband's favourite sighting). One reason why DeVito is spending more time in Miami these days is the opening of his new restaurant, Devito South Beach which has been described as "Italian chop house," and serves steaks, sushi and pasta dishes. The signature dish is the Global Steak Flight, which includes Japanese Kobe Beef, Australian Wagyu Rollatini and American Kobe Flat Iron. This is DeVito's second entrepreneurial gig; after a charmingly hungover appearance on The View last year thanks to a night of drinking too many limoncellos with George Clooney, he also launched his own brand of limoncello liquer. Gansevoort Goes South

Submitted by Christina Valhouli on Mon, 2007-10-29 15:14.

When we were in Miami earlier this month, we heard people chatting about the new Gansevoort hotel which is slated to open there. And unlike most overheard beach gossip, this rumour is actually true. The Gansevoort South  will open in January 2008 and is located on Collins Avenue, between 23rd and 24th Streets, on the former site of Roney Plaza. The hotel will have 334 rooms and 259 condominiums, as well as a DavidBartonGym + Spa. There will also be lots of luxury boutiques, including the the first Miami outposts of INCA, Big Drop and Cutler, a lounge by The Opium Group, and restaurants by Philippe Chow and The ONE Group's STK. And there will also be a touch of Dr. Evil: the lobby will have a 50 foot shark tank. Gansevoort South, 2377 Collins, Miami, Florida. Phone:  (305) 604-1000.

Hot In The Kitchen

Submitted by Christina Valhouli on Fri, 2007-10-19 11:44.

If you watch a lot of reality cooking shows, you'd easily think that every chef screams, swears and stops just short of throwing knives at his sous-chef (can you tell? I watch a lot of Gordon Ramsay's The F Word). But if you want an all-together mellower look at a top chef at work, book yourself a seat at Vix's chef's table. This sleek restaurant is located inside the swanky Hotel Victor on South Beach. Designed by Jacques Garcia, the look is sensual with a touch of the bordello. The dining room has a tank full of live jelly fish (which thankfully don't make an appearance on the menu) plus a resident DJ to add to the fun. While some restaurants have their chef's table tucked inside the kitchen behind closed doors, Vix has an open-plan kitchen and the ”˜table' is really a four seat counter built in front of the kitchen, offering a bird's eye view of all the action.

Mandarin Oriental, Miami

I must be getting old.  I've become one of those people who don't leave the hotel unless absolutely necessary.  But then again, we're not just talking about any hotel, we're talking about a Mandarin Oriental. On a recent trip to Miami, I ran around South Beach.  While furiously sandal-shopping, salsa-dancing, or even stone crab-claw-eating, I found myself pining for the white-cushioned day beds at the private beach club at the Mandarin Oriental.

Nikki Beach Sets Sail

Submitted by Christina Valhouli on Mon, 2007-04-23 20:25.

Fans of South Beach in Miami know Nikki Beach as one of the hottest spots in town to chill out, drink and dance the night (or day) away. Now there's a whole new way to experience the Nikki Beach vibe- at sea. Nikki Beach At Sea is set to embark on its maiden voyage in 2009 by enjoying New Year's Eve in St. Barths, followed by Carnival in Rio, Winter Fest in Miami, the Cannes Film Festival and a jaunt to the Canary Islands. Not to be outdone by any other floating party ship, Nikki Beach at sea will also be home to an in-house modeling agency, private clinic for plastic surgery, and an outdoor concert arena.

Do you like the sun, sand, surf and good food? We do. So start planning a trip to Miami for the 2007 South Beach Wine & Food Festival, which runs February 22-27. A few of the super star celebrity chefs in attendance will include Anthony Bourdain, Marcus Samuelsson, Daniel Bouley, Eric Ripert, Martha Stewart, and the Mondavi brothers. Oh Nicky, You're So Fine

It was bound to happen- sometime. Nicky Hilton, the somewhat quieter, less flashy Hilton sister, is opening her own chain of hotels. Nicky O (her middle name is Olivia) is scheduled to open in Miami next month. Nicky has enlisted the help of several famous designers to decorate the rooms, including Roberto Cavalli, who will be doing the 5,000-sq. foot penthouse. The overall look will be French Regency meets Hollywood, and the building will also offer condos for sale. Another location will be planned for Chicago, on Printer's Row. But what we want to know is, will little chiuahuhas be offered from room service as well?
