Close your eyes and imagine a picture perfect Miami beach hotel. You’re probably seeing a white washed space with pops of color and plenty of light, which is what most South Beach hotels look like- and also part of the reason that seeing The Setai for the first time can be a bit of a shock. It’s a dark hotel but rather than being gloomy, the hotel feels like a sexy, soothing respite from the sun.

Opened in 2005, the Setai stands out from the rest of the hotel pack in Miami for its sleek, Asian-inspired design. Although it is housed on the site of the former 1930s Art Deco Dempsey Vanderbilt Hotel, the design is pure Asian with subtle deco touches. It’s easy to see where the design inspiration came from. When it opened, the Setai was managed by GHM Hotels, which counted legendary hotelier Adrian...

pelicanairplane.jpgFrom the sandy side of Ocean Drive, it's difficult to pick out the Pelican Hotel from its neighbors—it's difficult, in fact, to see the hotel at all, through the swarms of mini-skirted, see-and-be-seen strollers and outdoor diners clogging the sidewalk day and night. It's there, though, and entirely a treat, a design hotel with that most unlikely quality: a sense of humor to match its aesthetic attractions and a perfect, ocean-side location.

There are certainly more serious design hotels in Miami Beach—a growing number, even within the last few months, as a collection of well-known names have appeared in town: Witness the Gansevoort South on Collins Avenue, or the Marcel Wanders-designed...

The_Betsy_Miami.jpgEach season, it seems like Miami is becoming more and more like Manhattan by the sea, with outposts of Barneys, Smith and Wollensky and The Gansevoort. This year Manhattan hotspot BLT Steak will be joining the ranks. The restaurant will be located in the newly revamped Betsy Hotel, formerly the Betsy Ross on Ocean Drive. Officially opening in March, the guest rooms will have a glamorous but unstuffy look, with accessories like four poster beds and silk chandeliers. Although the beach is just across the road, guests can also hang out in the rooftop solarium, ideal for working on a tan without having to mingle with the masses. At night the solarium becomes a bar. For relaxing, there will also be an in-house spa. The Betsy, 1440 Ocean Drive, Miami Beach, Florida 33139. Phone: (305) 531-3934.

anglers_hotel.jpgIs it just me or does a new hotel open in Miami every other week? Joining the latest crop is the Angler’s Hotel. The hotel is smack in the middle of Washington Street and is housed in a series of former Art Deco buildings, which are connected by walkways. The look is very soothing and grown up- with lots of taupe and cream used in the 49 guest rooms. The smallest rooms are more like studio apartments and the biggest have outdoor hot tubs and terraces. The Angler’s  has a rooftop terrace,  open-air lounge and pool, and the in house restaurant is a Parisian style brasserie. The Angler's Boutique Resort, 660 Washington Avenue, Miami, Florida. Phone (305) 534-9600.

whitelaw_hotel.JPGThe next time I’m in Miami, I know where I’ll want to call home- the groovy Whitelaw hotel. You have to love a hotel whose motto is, "Clean sheets, hot water, stiff drinks.” This eye-popping place- which has a very liberal use of hot pink- is located in the middle of it all on Collins Avenue, near the beach.  It’s a bit rock and roll, very glam and it’s been described as David Lachapellesque. The Whitelaw also seems to be quite the party hotel. There are complimentary drinks from 7 p.m. to 8 p.m. daily at the martini bar, and the hotel offers VIP access to some of Miami’s hottest clubs. Guest rooms have shag carpets, plasma televisions and crystal chandeliers. It's all so Austin Powers in South Beach. Heavenly! The Whitelaw, 808 Collins Avenue, Miami Beach, Florida 33139, Phone...

When we were
in
South
Beach in October, we noticed that Danny DeVito
was staying at our hotel, The Setai. (However, the DeVito sighting pales in
comparison to our all-time best cele
b sighting- Giselle Bundchen at the Mandarin Oriental in New
York ..Well, it was my husband's favourite sighting). One reason
why DeVito is spending more time in
Miami...

When we were in Miami
earlier this month, we heard people chatting
about the new Gansevoort hotel which is slated to open there. And
unlike most overheard beach gossip, this rumour is actually true.
The
Gansevoort South
will open in January 2008 and is located
on
Collins Avenue, between 23rd and
24th Streets, on the...

If you watch a lot of reality cooking shows,
you'd easily think that every chef screams, swears and stops just
short of throwing knives at his sous-chef (can you tell? I watch
a lot of Gordon Ramsay's The F Word). But if you want an all-together
mellower look at a top chef at work, book yourself a seat at
Vix's chef's table. This sleek restaurant is located
inside the swanky Hotel Victor on
South Beach. Designed...

I must be getting
old.  I've become one of those people who don't
leave the hotel unless absolutely necessary.
But then again, we're not just talking about any hotel, we're
talking about a Mandarin Oriental.

On a recent trip to
Miami, I ran around South Beach.  While
furiously sandal-shopping, salsa-dancing, or even stone
crab-claw-eating, I found myself pining for the white-cushioned
day beds at the private beach club at the Mandarin Oriental.

Had I been offered a shawl and a
pair of reading glasses in the hotel dining room, it might have
confirmed my suspicions of old age.  (Pashminas
and reading glasses in variety of strengths really...

Fans of South Beach in Miami know
Nikki
Beach
as one of the hottest spots in town to chill out, drink
and dance the night (or day) away. Now there's a whole new way to
experience the Nikki Beach vibe- at sea. Nikki Beach At
Se
a is set to embark on its maiden voyage in 2009 by enjoying
New Year's Eve in St. Barths, followed by Carnival in Rio, Winter
Fest in Miami, the Cannes Film Festival and a jaunt to the Canary
Islands. Not to be outdone by any other floating party ship,
Nikki Beach at sea will also be home to an in-house modeling
agency, private clinic for plastic surgery, and an outdoor
concert arena.
