whippedcookie.jpgOk even I am getting a little sick of reading about endless cupcake shop openings…which is why I was so happy to come across a shop specialising in cookies! Whipped Bakeshop, the brainchild of Zoe Lukas, sells cookies, wedding cakes and the inevitable cupcakes in her LEED-certified building. It all looks great but I am blown away by the design of her cookies, like this sugar cookies which look like Delft tiles. For custom orders, she has also whipped up Obama cookies and a set of very cool airplane altimeter dial cookies – anything is possible from her custom orders. Whipped Bakeshop, 36 Belgrade Street, Philadelphia PA. Phone: (215) 598-5449.

Philadelphia has gotten a little Egyptian fever
thanks to the grand Tutankhamun and the Golden Age of the
Pharaohs
exhibit at the Franklin Institute. Locals are now sipping Jewel of
the
Nile winter melon caipirinhas at tapas hotspot Amada and hitting
up Rescue Rittenhouse Spa Lounge for a little exotic
salvation in the form of the Cleopatra Rescue Treatment.
Recently, I was in

One of
Philadelphia's
newest restaurants is the quirkily named Frog At the Yard. Located
in
South Philly's old Navy
Yard, Frog is the brainchild of caterer Steve Poses. His
restaurant is located in a 20,000-square-foot former pipefitter's
shop, and now serves breakfast and lunch. The vast space is
broken up by koi ponds and bamboo gardens, and the teak coffee
bar is made from an authentic jharoka. Try the salads of grilled
fig, fennel, orange and feta; rabbit sausage and chestnut soup
with faro; and barbecue brisket thin-crust pizza.

When in Pennsylvania, we know it's tempting
to head to the King of Prussia Mall for breezy one-stop shopping.
But the City of Brotherly Love is well worth the 75-minute train
ride from New York's Penn Station. The biggest department store
in town might be a Macy's and there's buzz about the soon to come
Barneys
CO-OP
but truly great stuff can be found in Philadelphia's
offbeat boutiques.

They don't call Philadelphia the “sixth
borough of New York” for nothing. The best of Philly style might
be described as homespun, or hand-crafted, with boutiques often
doubling as gallery spaces. Everyone we met in the small,
neighborhood...
