If you're in the market for quirky and unique housewares in San Francisco, check out the newly opened General Store in the Outer Sunset district. The shop is the brainchild of Serena Mitnik-Miller and Mason St. Peter, who handpick a selection new, handmade and vintage items. Shoppers will find a little bit of everything, including tools, plants, jewelry, utilitarian items like laundry bins as well as art, books and clothing, and many of the goods are created by local artisans. General Store, 4035 Judah Street, San Francisco, CA 94122. Phone: (415) 682-0600. Closed Monday.

I’ve experienced San Francisco with just a few 48-hours-and-under visits over the past few years, and with my most recent trip, learned two things: although there’s a long wishlist of to-dos in the city by the Bay, I’m content if I’ve squeezed in a couple of key spots to visit, and that The Ritz-Carlton, San Francisco helps make the most of a quick hop.
The Ritz-Carlton, San Francisco’s only Mobil Five Star, AAA Five Diamond hotel, is on Nob Hill’s eastern slope—a location I find especially convenient given its close proximity to Union Square’s shops, Chinatown restaurants, and a straight shot downhill on the California Street Cable Car line through the financial district to the Ferry Terminal Building (a never-miss for me, more on that later). The...

I’ve always loved Banana Republic’s accessories. They are affordably priced and always on trend, with items like mock crock clutches and Indian-inspired chandelier earrings. If you’re also a fan, well, you’re in luck. BR has just opened its first accessories-only store in San Francisco, called Edition. There are plenty of bags, sunglasses, earrings and necklaces to get you decked out for spring. And if you’re looking for something a bit more special, the store will also have from 50-100 limited edition pieces only available in-store. And best of all, the goodies are rarely more than $100. Edition by Banana Republic, 865 Market street at Powell, San Francisco, CA. Phone: (415) 512-6776.

There is no shortage of fabulous restaurants in San Francisco, and one of the newest on the scene is Midi. The kitchen is helmed by rising star Michelle Mah, formerly of Ponzu. Her menu covers hearty California by way of France brasserie fare, and Mah uses plenty of local and organic ingredients. Diners can tuck into starters like pork rillette or a seafood and fried baby artichoke salad. For mains, there is duck leg confit, herbes pappardelle and grilled hanger steak – and of course there are frites on the side menu. The cocktail list is impressive; we liked the look of the Fashionably Old, a concoction of Knob Creek, turbinado sugar, and house-made rhubarb root bitters. Midi is open for brunch, lunch and dinner. Midi, 185 Sutter St. (at Kearny), San Francisco. Phone: (415) 835-6400.

Concept stores – you either love ‘em, or hate ‘em. Personally I like them for browsing but rarely ever buy anything in them. If you’re in San Francisco, check out Mi concept store. It isn’t entirely clear what the concept is, but the website is definitely groovy and we like that it's all a bit mysterious. From the pictures, the clothes look sleek and minimalist. If the “summer” weather in San Francisco has you down, how about a spot of shopping to lift your spirits? Check out the new Built by Wendy boutique, which opens later this week. The company was founded in 1991 by Wendy Mullin, and she has been steadily opening Built by Wendy boutiques in New York’s Little Italy, Brooklyn and Los Angeles. Her San Francisco store is her fourth. Wendy's signature look is clean and preppy with a twist, and her collection includes men’s and women’s jeans, dresses, sweaters and shoes. And if you’re a DIY kind of gal who wants to save a bit of money, you can also buy Built By Wendy patterns and sew your own blouses and dresses. Built by Wendy, 3520 20th Street, between Mission and Valencia, San Francisco, California. Phone: (415) 824-1562.

It's the end of the year,
which means that every publication on earth is coming out with
their annual Top 10 lists. One restaurant that seems to
be on a lot of people's gold star list is newcomer Spruce in San
Francisco. Located in Presidio Heights, the restaurant is the
latest project from the Bacchus Group,
which also owns the Village Pub and Pizza Antica. It took more
than two years to renovate the space, a former auto garage, into
a chic restaurant with soaring ceilings, chocolate brown walls
and faux caramel-coloured ostrich leather chairs. Spruce also has
a library and take-away deli selling gourmet cheeses and
pastries. Most of the produce comes from SMIP Ranch in the
Santa...

Jet lag can ruin
all sorts of plans. While I was in San Francisco earlier this month and holed up at the
luscious
Taj Campton
Place, I was too
tired and jet lagged to stray very far from the hotel in search
of a good meal. In the past, I've enjoyed dinner at Zuni, which I
love, but this time I relied on the concierge's tips for where to
eat close by. On our first night we...

Last week the
New York Times had a great article about the great overlooked
feature in the home bathroom- the urinal. Once relegated to
restaurant and bar bathrooms, urinals are making an appearance in
private homes. Apparently plenty of men are installing urinals in
their own homes, and the range of styles available is staggering.
One of the highlighted pieces of porcelain was this Georgia
O'Keefe-inspired orchid urinal by San Francisco-based artist
Clark
Sorenson, which sells for $9,500. Some of his other urinals
feature shells, calla...

I've visited San Francisco dozens of times
but I've never had a room in the Nob Hill area. So it's fitting
that my first stay in that swanky part of town should be at the
Huntington Hotel & Nob Hill
Spa.
Opened in 1924 as hotel apartments and converted
into a traditional hotel in 1947, The Huntington was the first
steel and brick high rise west of the Mississippi. Today, it's a
member of the Small
Luxury Hotels of the World group””and it shows.
The staff combine friendly smiles with
formal dignity and remembered my name throughout my stay. Coffee
or tea upon check in is a very welcoming touch as well. Guests
are provided with complimentary chauffeur service to city's
financial district and Union Square and enjoy free access to...
