treoonopener.bmpThere’s often kind of a nod nod, wink wink among devotees of the Four Seasons when they discuss the merits of the luxurious hotels. I’m spoiled enough to have stayed at three Four Seasons resorts in rather disparate parts of the world - Bali, Tokyo and now, Scottsdale - and I am always surprised to find how each property manages to be so particular to the region while maintaining uniformly indulgent service. And yes, as ridiculous as it sounds, I kind of want to collect them all. In my experience, once you arrive at a Four Seasons resort, it’s hard to leave. At The Four Seasons at Troon North, it wasn’t just because of the nice scenery, or the sunsets, or the heated pool.  Here, the expert staff keeps offering more thoughtful...

sanctuarybrightpool.jpgI had big plans for my trip to Scottsdale.  I managed to cram a pair of hiking shoes into my carry-on, along with running shoes and assorted workout gear. I made a list of must-try restaurants, and Google-mapped all the fashionable places to shop in Phoenix and Scottsdale.

Then I checked in for a night to The Sanctuary on Camelback Mountain, a luxury resort and spa in Scottsdale, and the list went out the window. In fact, I barely unpacked. It turns out all I needed was a bikini, flip-clops and a cover-up.

Scottsdale
is heating up. The Mondrian Scottsdale is
the second groovy hotel to open in this
Arizona city recently (we were
also impressed with the new Hotel Valley Ho). The Mondrian is
part of the Morgans Hotel Group so on
one level, guests will know what to expect from the design: lots
of gauzy white curtains, oversized chairs and sleek minimalism.
This hotel has been designed by Benjamin Noriega-Ortiz, and his
inspiration was the Garden of Eden. The 194 guest rooms are
decorated in shades of...

I have to confess
that
Scottsdale, Arizona may
not be tops on my list of places I want to visit but a whole new
reason to go is the gloriously retro cool Hotel Valley Ho. Once the
stomping ground of Marilyn Monroe and Humphrey Bogart, the hotel
has received a makeover and re-opened about a year ago. This
groovy hotel has been done up in mid century modern style. Think
eye popping candy colours and clean shapes, with modern amenities
such as wi-fi and flat-screen televisions. Some guestrooms
