Now Open: “The Nest” at Los Almendros de San Lorenzo
It’s been called one of the best boutique hotels in El Salvador and from the beginning Los Almendros de San Lorenzo was unexpected.
Opened in 2005, after a 17 month renovation of a 200-year-old house, the hotel is the creation of a French fashion executive (Pascal Libaily) and a former El Salvadorian ambassador (Joaquín Rodezno).
The hotel melds traditional Central American design and décor with French antiques and modern art collected and displayed with the couple’s elegant, easy style.
Even the location—in Suchitoto, a breathtakingly beautiful colonial town 25 miles outside the capital of San Salvador—is unexpected.
The hotel has 11 rooms ($85-$135 with full breakfast), including two suites (one with an interior fountain) and two sprawling duplexes. A pool, relaxing stone courtyards, a gourmet restaurant (be sure to try the local sausage appetizer plate) and the charming resident Boston terrier, Lorenzo, round out the stylish villa vibe.
Pascal and Joaquin’s latest unexpected move is the opening of El Nido, The Nest. Guests wanting an even more private and pampered experience can now book this brand new split level art-filled house ($150 with breakfast) around the corner from the main hotel. It offers a living room, a small kitchen (with refrigerator, sink and microwave), a rainhead shower with a dazzling view of Lake Suchitlan and a jetted, infinity-edge plunge pool set amongst landscaped gardens and stone decks with more views down to the lake.
