Sydney is a city blessed with an abundance of riches: an amazing harbour, superb cuisine and perfect weather, not to mention world class shopping. Fashionwise, it's not all flip-flops and beach cover ups. Homegrown designers including Tim O'Connor, Lisa Ho and Collette Dinnigan are known globally for their elegant designs. But if Aussie beach style is what you're after, you won't be disappointed. Shops such as Zimmerman and My Island Home perfectly embody Australia's unique take on beach life. Even if you don't have an island home, upscale lifestyle stores including Empire and Orson & Blake will take care of all your stylish homeware needs. And while out and about shopping, watch out for that powerful sun and do what the Aussies do: Slip! Slop! Slap!

Belinda

When most people think of high fashion in Sydney, they think of Belinda. The shop is the brainchild of former model Belinda Seper, and is similar to Brown's of London- a small, chic department store that stocks international labels including Hussein Chalayan, Tsubi, Ann Demeulemeester, Carol Christian Poell, Helmut Lang and Emma Hope. There are now eight Belinda stores in Sydney -- one is devoted entirely to menswear -- with locations in Paddington and Double Bay.

My Island Home

Open for four years, My Island Home sells a wide variety of products that are inspired by an island/beach vibe. Goods are sourced from all over the Pacific, including Fiji, Tonga, Samoa, Hawaii, and the Cook Islands. On sale is everything from tunics, Hawaiian print shirts, driftwood lamps, big beaded necklaces, horn and silver salad servers and even Hawaiian hula skirts, in case the need for one strikes. The vibe is cute without being too saccharine, and makes a perfect stop for picking up gifts, or decorating your own island home.

Arte Flowers

More than just a flower shop, Arte Flowers is stuffed with candles, beauty products, and a small selection of clothing as well as woolly blankets. There's also an in-store café. Do what the locals do: order a plate of macaroons and a cup of T2 tea, and pull up a chair at the huge wooden table in the middle of the shop. Plenty of people sit for hours flipping through fashion magazines, or bring their laptops for some work.

Colette Dinnigan

Collette Dinnigan is arguably Australia's best known fashion designer. Her dresses have been worn by Angelina Jolie and Halle Berry, and her designs have an old-world glamour to them. Her flagship store is just as dreamy and romantic as her dresses, with a white-washed floor and silk curtains in the dressing room.

This lifestyle boutique sells an outstanding collection of housewares, including linen sheets, lamps, cushions, beautifully packaged soaps and sheepskin slippers. The shop -- and the goods -- are mostly in monochromatic, muted shades of cream and taupe, so if you're after hot pink floor cushions, look elsewhere.

Sydney is synonymous with beach culture, and there's no better place to pick up a bikini worthy of Bondi than Zimmerman. The brainchild of sisters Nicole and Simone Zimmerman, the company produces top end, trendy swim and beachwear. Last season's collection was titled “My Wayward Youth” and featured sexy sundresses and bikinis with ruched detailing. The line is also available at Barneys and Saks Fifth Avenue.

Paablo Nevada

Betty Fong and Wayne Homschek are the design duo behind the label Paablo Nevada. The original store opened in Bondi Beach, but the Double Bay location stocks delicate chiffon dresses, cropped jackets and pencil skirts. The vibe is ultra-feminine and girly, with plenty of structure and a colour palette of soft, muted tones. Each collection is also designed around a theme- past inspirations have included “Farm Couture” and turn-of-the-century Australian sport.

Orson & Blake

Although the term “lifestyle concept store” is overused, it perfectly sums up Orson & Blake. This chic store sells designer homewares and furniture, as well as a collection of women's clothing from international and Australian designers. Be sure to check out the Surry Hills location as well, which is even bigger.
